Spring cleaning is afoot, with those cleaning out the waste in their houses. One household object that is particularly tricky to get rid of is paint. Lynn Whaley of Wemiga Waste in Mount Pleasant explains the proper ways to get rid of a water-based latex paint, “Latex paint can be dried out by opening up the lid and obviously if there’s a lot of paint in the can left then you’re gonna want to put kitty litter in it and dry the paint completely out. Then and only then you can throw it in the trash, once the paint is cured because it is a water based product.” If you don’t own kitty litter Whaley says another option is to spread latex paint on cardboard.
For oil-based paint or varnishes, Whaley says those need to be taken to the Washington recycling center. Whaley says the recycling center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on mondays, and will be open until the end of October.
