Spring is a time when plants are green and blooming and if you’re thinking of adding a tree to your yard there are some steps to ensure a successful outcome.

Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommend you dig a hole that is two to three times wider in diameter than the container if you’re planting a container-grown tree. The depth of the hole should be about two inches less than the height of the soil ball, unless in poorly drained soils and then it should be about two-thirds the height of the soil ball. Once the hole is dug, carefully lay the tree on its side and slide the tree out of the container. Then put the tree in the hole and gradually fill the hole with soil, firming it in place with your hands as you go. Once it’s planted, water thoroughly. If the tree is wrapped in burlap, cut away and remove the burlap on the top one-third of the rootball. Also, it’s advised to not add compost, peat moss, or other organic materials to the soil when planting trees to help promote root development.
