Old Glory will be seen frequently around Washington this weekend as residents prepare to observe Memorial Day on Monday.
Events on Friday include memorial gatherings at Halcyon House and the United Presbyterian Home, and marking graves of veterans at Elm Grove Cemetery at 5 p.m. Monday will begin with the raising of the flag at the post office, and a ceremony on the Crooked Creek Bridge on Old Highway 92 for Navy and Marine service people with a talk from Dale Torpey about their service.
At 10 a.m. the main program will be held at Washington High School. Wayne Kaufman is helping to organize the events and shares the speaker at the main program is retired Colonel Kenneth Madden of the Crawfordsville area, “He spent 31 years in the service, five years active duty, 26 years in the reserve. And after his retirement from the reserve, he served for the state department as counter-intelligence training officer.” Post 29 Honor Guard will do a rifle salute. Will Hart will sing the National Anthem and Taps will be plays John Harris. Kaufman says it’s important for young people to learn about the history and remember those who sacrificed for freedom.
Monday afternoon the Chapel of Remembrance will be open at Elm Grove Cemetery, and the F Troop Military Museum will be open. Kaufman also encourages people to visit the all veterans memorial on Lexington Boulevard.
