When the clock strikes 8 a.m. Saturday on the courthouse clock tower in downtown Washington, 120 trees will be given away to residents of the city.

The Washington Tree Committee’s annual giveaway will be held Saturday on the east side of the square. Yellowwood, Norway Spruce, White Oak, Meyer Spruce, Red Bud, Showy Mountain Ash, and Contender Peach are a few of the species of trees that will be available. The committee asks that one tree be taken per household. The variety of trees range in size from 12 feet in height to 80 feet when fully grown. The program is funded in part by the Washington Iowa Betterment Foundation. Remember to call Iowa One Call before digging to plant trees to make sure there aren’t buried utilities. 1-800-292-8989
