The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team kept their season alive Monday night in the first round of the Class 2A Substate tournament, beating the Washington Demons 2-0 at the Washington Soccer Complex.

Windy conditions and stout defenses kept the game scoreless going into the halftime break. Mid-Prairie broke through in the 65th minute of the match when Jason Tew stuck with a through ball and knocked the loose ball to the back of the net. Ricky Vargas doubled the Golden Hawk lead 10 minutes later with a back post goal to make the score 2-0.

The two goals were enough for the Mid-Prairie defense and Ryan Miller in goal who ended the contest with three saves for his clean sheet.

The Washington Demons conclude their season at 6-8 with the loss. The Demons lose seniors Kyle Anderson, John Dillon and Owen Horak to graduation. The Golden Hawks improve to 7-5 on the year and will next be in action Wednesday night when they travel to No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier to battle the Saints in a substate semifinal.
