Memorial Day weekend is a time to recognize veterans who are no longer with us. Also, it can be a time to support the services that aid older veterans and community members.
The Goodwin Senior Center in Wellman is holding their Memorial Day Brunch on Monday from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be a free-will donation for the event to help cover utility and other costs of the Goodwin Senior Center. This brunch is one of a few events the center holds every year to raise funds for the dining program. The Goodwin Center prepares meals for senior citizens every weekday, and they also deliver meals to those at home. Site Manager Anita Kanagy encourages people to join this service, “Lately we’ve had some people who have passed away or moved to the nursing home, so our numbers have gotten a little smaller. But we’re trying to encourage people to come down and eat, and be able to take part of the fellowship here that we have with the meal. And also if they need a home delivery to give us a call and we’ll make food for them, and we have volunteers that deliver the meals.”
Kanagy stresses that this meal service is not only important to the citizens of Wellman but also for those who live in the surrounding communities. Kanagy says a lot of citizens take advantage of this service but she feels that a lot of people are unaware of the Goodwin Center. Kanagy says they decided to hold this fundraising brunch on Memorial Day for people to attend either before or after attending Memorial Day services. Everyone is welcome to attend this event.
