We tend to recognize animals that are native to us, like a raccoon or a deer. But what about the animals that migrate through Iowa every year?

The Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge educates those of all ages about birds annually with their Spring Bird Festival. On May 20 the Port Louisa NWR will be hosting a variety of activities, including showing how birds are captured, banded, and released, in order to track migration patterns. There will be two bird walks, the second one specifically aimed towards children and families. These free events will educate on how birds “talk”. Kathy Vance of Port Louisa NWR, says these events are important to educate Iowans on the different birds that migrate over eastern Iowa, as Louisa County is situated on the Mississippi migration flyway. The Spring Bird Festival is taking place at the Port Louisa NWR Headquarters in Wapello.
