Services are being held, flags are being flown, wreaths will be laid, and Taps will be played across the country today as Memorial Day is observed.

Many offices and businesses are closed today for the national holiday. Wayne Kaufman who helps organize the Washington Memorial Day events says it’s important for younger generations to observe the day, to learn about our history, and remember those who sacrificed for freedom, “If we do not have the young people involved, and remember what has happened in the past, it will be like a missing link to the future, because all of these sacrifices of the men, and women, and the families, will be overlooked.” Today the Chapel of Remembrance will be open at Elm Grove Cemetery, and the F Troop Military Museum will be open. Kaufman also encourages people to visit the all veterans memorial on Lexington Boulevard. Washington’s service will be held at 10 a.m. at the high school with retired Colonel Kenneth Madden speaking.
