Roth Track and Field at WACO High School was full of Lions, Wolves, Eagles, Savages, Warriors and more Thursday night as they hosted several area teams at the Class 1A state qualifier track meet.

In boys action Lone Tree had the top area finish, taking second place in the team race with 110.50 points. Pekin won the meet with 174 points. Automatic state qualifiers for the Lions included Brock Smith winning the 800 with a time of 2:03.91. Niko Gosnell won the high jump with a new school record set at 6’8”. Jovonte Squiers won the long jump, leaping 21’11” to qualify for state. Casey Shalla was the discus champion with his throw of 127’7”. The Lions sprint medley team also qualified with a title, beating the field in a time of 1:38.11.

Sigourney was third in the team standings with 95 points. The Savages had three automatic event qualifiers with Bryce Goldman taking the 100 in a time of 11.06 seconds. Avery Moore was a two time champion, taking the 200 in 22.55 seconds and the 400 in 50.08 seconds.

WACO came in fourth of 14 teams with a score of 62 points. The Warrior shuttle hurdle relay was an automatic qualifier, winning the title in 1:00.70 seconds.

Winfield-Mt. Union was sixth with 48 points, Keota took eighth with 35 points, and Iowa Mennonite 14th with five points.

On the girls side of the meet Sigourney posted the top area finish, taking third of 12 schools with 88 points. Pekin won the meet with 158 points. The Savages qualified four events automatically for next week’s state track meet. Autum Barthelman won the 100m dash and 100 hurdles in times of 12.58 and 15.52 seconds respectively. Summer Barthelman won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.46 and the long jump with a leap of 17’4.25”.

Lone Tree was sixth in the team standings with 46 points. WACO was seventh of 12 teams with 44 points, IMS eighth with 44 points, and Winfield-Mt. Union ninth with 37 points.
