Brittany Burnham has been a nurse for all walks of life, from OBGYN to nursing homes.

She now serves those in an in between stage of life: public school. Wednesday was National School Nurse day and Burnham has recently spent her first year as the nurse for the WACO school district. Burnham says she enjoys working with kids, as she has studied pediatrics in the past and is a mother of two.

Burnham has had a busy year as the school nurse, as the WACO district has provided different services to students such as immunizations, dental and vision screenings, and CPR training. Burnham talks about some memorable moments this year, “Had a couple good broken bones this year, not out of the skin but almost. Those were exciting, fun days for just being a nurse. I don’t think other people would call them exciting or fun.”

As her first year at the job Burnham says it was somewhat stressful, but she comments about the future, “ I think I am just looking forward to having a year under my belt, and being more comfortable and confident as a school nurse, because it is so much different than hospital nursing. You just don’t realize what all a school nurse does until you are actually doing it.” Burnham says strep throat has been common at WACO this year, and with the warmer weather she warns parents to look out for lice.
