At this time, ashes are not to be brought to the Washington County rural solid waste and recycling center but people are doing so.

Lynn Whaley of WEMIGA Waste, who operates the facility for the county, says people are bringing in ashes in garbage bags. Whaley says, “We do have an issue here, people are bringing ashes in. We shouldn’t be taking them. We’re not supposed to be taking them, but it’s come about that they’d always bringing ashes in all along, not only in bags but bringing burn barrels in. After talking to the landfill as well, they don’t want them brought in like that, they want them handled separately.” The county board of supervisors is now considering purchasing a special container for ashes, so they won’t be mixed in with regular garbage and recyclables. No action has been taken on the item.
