A Washington High School junior has made local academic history.

Dr. Monie Hayes, Savannah White’s faculty partner during her recent honors project, explains White is the first concurrent credit academy student to do the honors program at Kirkwood Community College. Not the first at Washington. The first in the program’s history. White’s project was over global perspectives of feminism.

She read books, articles on websites, watched films and reviewed interviews for research for the programs. White presented her final project, a 15-page essay, at the Kirkwood main campus in Cedar Rapids last week. Hayes said White presented her final project among many traditional students, “It’s been fascinating not only to learn things along with Savannah, but to just see her be so motivated and do so well.”

And while some students may be planning trips to the pool or taking a break from academics, such is not the case for White, “I might do a summer ASL class.” When asked if she ever takes a break she simply responded, “No, can’t.” White would like to study both English and Criminal Justice in college.
