Across the street from the WACO High School sits an opportunity for community engagement and healthy living.

The Wayland Community Garden is welcome for those who want to help plant vegetables for the community. Volunteer Kathy Yoder talks about the garden’s mission, “Really the purpose is not only to provide vegetables and healthy eating opportunities for people with insufficient funds to get exactly what they want and need. It’s also an opportunity to provide community among people who have the common interest of a community garden. So it’s an opportunity for people to come together that wouldn’t otherwise, their paths wouldn’t cross.”

This year the Wayland Community Garden has expanded, and so far Yoder says they’ve planted an assortment of vegetables including onions, spinach, radishes, potatoes, and green beans. People of all ages are encouraged to help plant, weed, and harvest in the garden on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Fridays at 9 a.m., weather permitting. Anyone is welcome to then take home and enjoy the vegetables. More information on the garden can be found on their Facebook page.
