For a decade Wayland residents have had to travel to neighboring towns for groceries.

One Wayland couple got tired of the inconvenience and decided to open a discount grocery store on Main Street on May 2. Adam and Missy Newman opened the Wayland Discount Grocery and More in the same space that was occupied by previous grocery stores, but has sat empty for a decade.

Adam and Missy said they had looked around Wayland for a location since the fall, but it was word-of-mouth that led them to acquire this location. Adam says the space was used as a construction shop for apartment renovation on the second floor, and he describes walking into the space a few months ago, “It’s almost, you don’t understand unless you were in here on February 13 when we walked in here. I mean it was nothing like this, it was just absolute destruction.” Adam said they did a complete remodel, while trying to keep some of the historical integrity of the building.

The Wayland Discount Grocery and More seeks to be a convenient option for Wayland residents needing basic groceries.

The Newmans were originally going to use only half of the occupied space, but Adam said the vision grew beyond what they initially intended, to include items like frozen foods. Adam talks about the community support for the store, “Once word got out, everyone’s been extremely helpful. I mean even the guys from the city helping us unload a fork truck in the back, you know, with their tractors. It’s been a lot of fun, the whole process.” Starting this week Wayland citizens won’t have to go to the local gas station or travel several miles to the nearest town for basic groceries like bread and milk.
