One game. That is all that separates the Columbus boys’ soccer team from back-to-back state appearances as they head to Solon today for a class 1A sub-state final.

If you like a defensive battle, this is the game for you as both teams are in the top 10 for class 1A in least goals allowed. Expect goals to be few and far between as the Wildcats (11-5) and Spartans (15-5) have posted a combined 21 defensive shutouts on the year. Eric Cantarero looks to be up for the challenge as he leads the Wildcat offense with a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North division leading 21 goals on the season. The Spartans have some offensive playmakers of their own as they have a trio of players with double-digit goals on the year.

The Wildcats advanced to the final by beating Notre Dame 2-0 on Wednesday as the Spartans defeated Holy Trinity 3-0. Something has got to give as both teams have not given up a goal in the postseason.

The chance to punch a ticket to the state tournament starts at noon today at Solon High School.
