Roofing, asphalt paving, and painting are all common jobs during the summer months, but the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to be wary of scams.

The office says this time of year is when they see an increase in the number of scam contacts. Often, subjects go door to door and ask for gift cards as payment, and then charge inflated amounts for the work done. They recommend, that if you think you may have been scammed contact your bank immediately to protect your accounts. It’s also recommended to contact the Better Business Bureau for more information.

If you see suspicious people in the area, or if you are approached by someone offering this type of work, contact the Washington County Communications Center at 319-653-2107. Try to obtain a vehicle description, a license plate, and the number of people involved to help alert authorities.
