John Patrick DeWispelaere
A man from Davenport is in jail after wrecking his vehicle and stealing a car at the crash site this morning.
According to the Washington County Communications Office, at 7:09 a.m. a car drove into the ditch in the 2700 block of G36 and struck a tree. A caller stopped and reported the driver of the crashed vehicle was up and walking. The caller stepped out of their own vehicle and while on the phone with dispatch, the man, 32-year-old John Patrick DeWispelaere, got into the caller’s vehicle and drove off toward Highway 218. Washington Police and Washington County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.
Johnson County deputies located the stolen vehicle in Hills at the Casey’s gas station. Authorities arrested Dewispelaere for operating while intoxicated second offense, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without owner consent, theft in the second degree, no insurance accident related, improper use of lanes, and failure to maintain control. He was taken to the Washington County Jail.
