The Kalona City Council awarded a contract to L.L. Pelling Co. in North Liberty for an asphalt paving street project.

Six contractors took out plans for this project but only L.L. Pelling came back with a bid of $236,000 at the council meeting June 19. Mayor Ken Herrington says the bid was about three percent below the estimate of the project. Herrington describes some of the project, “The biggest project on 6th Street up past the school. It’s an old concrete street that started cracking so we had some variations in levels. So they come in, they put an overlay on that, fill the cracks, and then come back and put a three-inch overlay on top to give you a nice smooth street.”

The paving is anticipated to be performed in July or August. This paving project is paid for by the State Road Use Tax Fund.
