Temperatures in Washington have already climbed into the 90s this summer and there have been emergency calls for children left unattended in cars.

Washington Police Officer Ron See says to make sure to always doublecheck, “Do not leave them in your car. Even like me, who on rare occasions will have my grandkids with me, it doesn’t do me any harm to take an extra two seconds and check that backseat every time, and make sure there is not a child in there.” He advises if you do see a child in an unattended car to call 911 because it is an emergency. Dispatchers will then send officers to the location. Often officers will be able to use their tools to get the vehicle open, but will resort to breaking a window if necessary.

A vehicle can be like an oven inside. See says temperatures can quickly get hot in a vehicle, even with windows down a little bit. If it’s 86 degrees outside, in five minutes it can be up to 93, and in 10 minutes it gets up to 99 degrees. He advises adults to see for themselves, “Just a real quick way that a person can test this for themselves, is if they drive somewhere today or this week with the temperatures the way they are, just shut off your car and try to sit in your car for five minutes and see how fast it does get hot inside that car.”

Again, if you see a child unattended in a vehicle call 911 for assistance in getting the child removed and to cooler temperatures.
