The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball and softball teams traveled to West Branch for a River Valley Conference doubleheader against the Bears on Monday.

In a pair of games heard on KCII, the Golden Hawks took game one of the softball double dip 8-5. The Hawks jumped out early with three runs in the first inning on a pair of errors by the Bears and an RBI single from Kylee Kos. Mid-Prairie would add another in the second when Jaselyn Robertson drove home Abby Tornow on a double to make it 4-0. West Branch climbed back in the game with a three run third to pull within 4-3 and Mid-Prairie had the answer with a three run fourth keyed by a Tornow RBI single with runs from Tornow, Kathryn Conway and Tayler Murphy. Trailing 7-3 the Bears got single runs in the fourth and fifth to climb within 7-5 and Mid-Prairie got an insurance tally in the top of the seventh when Tayler Murphy drove in Cassidy Rourke to make it 8-5. Rourke made the three run cushion stand up in the bottom of the seventh allowing just one hit in nailing down the complete game win. In going the distance, Rourke gave up 12 hits, five runs, walked three and struck out two. At the plate Tornow and Tayler Murphy each had two hits with Tornow scoring three times, with the win the Hawks moved to 10-18 on the season.

The Golden Hawk baseball team beat the Bears in game one of their doubleheader 3-2 and then came right back to beat them again by the same 3-2 score in the nightcap. In a game heard on KCII, Mid-Prairie freshman ace Brad Tornow was terrific, twirling five and a third innings of scoreless ball at the Bears, allowing just four hits. The Hawks scored in the second when Derek Rich drove in Keaton Duwa who led off the frame with a double on a sac fly to left. In the fourth Mid-Prairie got another single tally when Eli Steckley drew a bases loaded walk to run the score to 2-0. It was 3-0 Hawks in the sixth when Steckley brought home Rich on a sac fly. Despite some tense moments the Mid-Prairie pen made it stand up with Jared Miller and Collin Gingerich finishing the final inning and two thirds. The game ended with the winning runs on base as Tanner Lukavsky attempted to score from third on a ball that got away from Golden Hawk catcher Rex Peck, the ball did not get far enough away. Peck picked it up and raced down the third base line after Lukavsky eventually causing him to veer out of the basepath for the game’s final out. Karson Gingerich, Jacob Leonard and Duwa led the Hawks each with two hits and Steckley with two RBI. With the sweep Mid-Prairie is now 13-10 on the year.
