Henry County is home to one of four watershed-based demonstration projects in the state that is receiving a second round of funding.

The Lower Skunk Water Quality and Soil Health Initiative was originally funded in 2014 and was set to end this year. However, now the project will be granted additional funding from the Iowa Water Quality Initiative over the next 3 years. The funds are to be used on scaling up implementation of nutrient reduction conservation practices identified in the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The Iowa Water Quality Initiative was established in 2013 to help implement the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, a science and technology-based approach to achieving a 45% reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus losses to Iowa’s waters.
