Storms swept across Iowa Thursday night and a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for portions of Washington County.

Four members of the KCII Severe Weather Action Team brought up to the minute coverage on air for the storm warning that included Kalona, Wellman, Riverside, Keota, Hills, and Lone Tree. The National Weather Service issued the warning at 10:51 p.m. and it expired at about 11:30 p.m. Nickel-sized hail was reported by a trained weather spotter near Wellman. Nearly half an inch of rain fell. According to the Washington County Communications Office, shortly after midnight a large tree fell on 9th Avenue in Wellman, north of Highway 22, blocking both lanes of traffic. The City of Wellman and Alliant Energy responded for power lines that were down. Had the power gone off, KCII would still be on air with emergency back up generators, listen to KCII for weather updates.
