With 21,353 acres of cover crops Washington County leads the state.

According to the Washington County Economic Development Group that is six percent of all of Iowa’s cover crops in the fall of 2016. Also, of the crop acres in Washington County, 10% had cover crops last year. In comparison Iowa County had about 10,000 acres of cover crops, Keokuk and Henry counties had about 5,600, Johnson County had 4,600, Jefferson County had just over 4,000, and Louisa County had just over 3,000 acres of cover crops in the fall of 2016. The Iowa DNR reports Iowa’s 353,000 acres of cover crops was a nearly 18% increase from the year before.
