Superheroes will be out in full force today in Washington’s Central Park for Relay for Life.

So far $45,349.39 has been raised for the American Cancer Society to help fund cancer research and patient programs. The goal this year is to raise $80,000.

Deb Tisor says there is a full schedule of events and speakers lined up for the day beginning with Jason Collier at 10:45 p.m., “Tim Hadley, the middle school principal from Pekin, is going to speak on cancer and bullying. He had a YouTube video that went viral this year. And then we have a 16-year-old speaker from the West Branch-Tiffin area that is going to speak on his self-discovery of testicular cancer and treatment.” The 12th annual dessert auction will be held at 3 p.m. and a silent auction is going on throughout the day. The survivor ceremony begins at 5:15 p.m. followed by a survivor dinner at 6 p.m.

And the 7 o’clock hour will feature a unique event – a wedding at relay, as Angela Freese and Darryl Nicholson exchange vows. Tisor adds one of the first events the couple did together was Relay for Life, and she is a cancer survivor. Superheroes are the theme of their wedding. Everything is happening around Central Park in Washington from noon to 10 p.m. tonight.
