The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team blasted Columbus Saturday by an 18-0 score in four innings to open the class 2A district tournament.

The Wildcats best scoring chance came in the top of the first when Caleb McCullough and Evan Rees reached to start the game but Mid-Prairie starter Brad Tornow stranded the runners and Wildcats would not get anything else going the rest of the night. The Golden Hawks started hot at the plate themselves, scoring five times in the first inning on five hits. Mid-Prairie blew things open in the second inning when they sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 13 times. From there the Golden Hawks closed the game out in just four innings.

Eight different Hawks recorded hits, and seven different players scored run and had an RBI, led by Karson Gingerich who was two for four with four driven in and two runs scored and Keaton Duwa who was three for three with three runs scored and two driven in. Brad Tornow recorded the win on the hill for Mid-Prairie going two innings, giving up two hits and striking out four. McCullough was two for two to lead the Wildcats at the plate. Eric Rees took the loss, going two innings, giving up 15 hits and 18 runs. Columbus ends their season at 1-19, Mid-Prairie is now 15-14 and advances to the district semifinals Tuesday night at Iowa City Regina to match up with West Burlington.
