The No. 9 ranked Iowa City Regina baseball team grabbed an early lead over Mid-Prairie Saturday and rode that to a district championship, beating the Golden Hawks 9-3.

In a game heard on KCII, the Regals struck in the first when Blake Berns smashed a grand slam to right center field putting Regina up 4-0. The Regals scored three more in the second including a Berns two RBI single to stretch their lead to 7-0. Mid-Prairie got on the board in the fifth when Karson Gingerich hustled home from second base while Jacob Leonard was hung up in a run down. In the sixth, the Hawks scored twice when Eli Steckly and Keaton Duwa reached to lead off the frame and Ethan Danner drove the ball off the left center field wall to pull Mid-Prairie within 7-3. That was as close as the Hawks would get as Regina posted a pair of insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-3 win.

The Golden Hawks were led in the contest by Karson Gingerich with a pair of hits and Ethan Danner with 2RBI. Brad Tornow took the loss on the hill, the starter went an inning and a third, giving up six runs on six hits. With the loss Mid-Prairie ends their season at 16-15. The Golden Hawks say good bye to five seniors Braeden Nielsen, Ryan Miller, Derek Rich, Ethan Danner and Jared Miller. Regina improves to 26-7 and will play No. 3 Wilton Tuesday in substate.
