On their last day of the regular season, Highland softball dropped a pair of games when they traveled to Alburnett for a tournament on Saturday.

In a back and forth affair, the Huskies’ lost to Vinton-Shellsburg (11-26) in game one 8-7. Highland jumped out with an early three runs in the top of the first inning. The Vikings answered back with two in the bottom half of the inning and a big fourth stunned the Huskies as they broke out for five runs to take the lead. Highland showcased their offensive firepower in the fifth to tie it at 7-7 but one more tally by the Vikings in the bottom half of the inning shut the door on the Huskies. Kelsey Hora went 4-for-4 at the plate with a RBI to lead Highland. Brylee Carolan went 4 2/3 innings in the circle giving up two earned runs on eight hits.

In game two, Independence (23-13) took advantage of early runs to cruise to an 8-4 win. The Mustangs managed six runs in the first three innings to jump out to a lead they would never relinquish. Lindsay Wide led the Huskies offensively going 2-for-3 and Carolan added a hit with a pair of RBI. Megan Hoenig went all seven innings giving up three earned runs on 12 hits.

With the losses Highland drops to 20-7 on the year. The new season begins now for the Huskies as they open up postseason play on Wednesday hosting Pekin (16-9).
