The City of Kalona has made steady progress on their safe routes sidewalks project.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh gives an update, “The last section that we have to do is some backfill in the area. All of the concrete has been poured, but yeah, they have some backfilling to do when it’s a little bit dryer.”

The new sidewalks have been poured along sections of 6th, 10th, and 14th Streets. Schlabaugh said during the July 13 city council meeting that All American Concrete will return in September to do the final seeding. Schlabaugh and council member Jenelle Bender both said they’ve heard positive feedback on the new sidewalks that provide safer travel to the elementary and middle schools. The council approved the first payment of $112,200.92 to All American Concrete. The total project is estimated at $183,000.
