Those who have fought cancer will be honored at the third annual luminary event in Wellman.

The event is organized by the Relay for Life Prairie Power team. Team leader Bob Freeman says there were approximately 300 luminaries that were lit last year, “Some bags just have their name on there, some bags are really decorated up. There are some really neat designs that some people do, they put some time in on those bags.” The names on the luminaries are of both cancer survivors and memorialize those who lost their battle to cancer. The event raises funds for Relay for Life, as Prairie Power team members are selling luminary bags for $5 to those wishing to honor loved ones.

Freeman says the event serves as a mini-relay event, “Every year I have something that happens that really touches me. We had a gentleman last year who couldn’t walk the whole track, and he rode the wheelchair about ¾ of the way around, and then the last part he walked.”

Prairie Power’s luminary event takes place July 14 at the Mid-Prairie High School track. The event begins with setting free homing pigeons, and will end with Chinese lanterns being set off into the night sky.
