Pure jubilation. That was the feeling around the Demon softball team after a walk-off two-run single off the bat of Kaitlyn Mitchell to triumph Washington over Williamsburg on Friday night 2-1.

As heard on KCII, in a classic pitcher’s dual, the game was scoreless heading into the sixth inning. The Demons had plenty of chances with runners on base in numerous innings but Raider pitcher Nicole Zuber made pitches when she needed to get out of jams. The Raiders finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when Amaleah Weldon cashed in with a RBI single. Taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, the Demons were down to their final chance when the offense went to work. Kinsey Duwa worked a lead off walk and then both Molly Sparks and Jessie Buchholz managed the rare feat of bunt singles. With bases loaded and no outs, Zuber hit her spots and retired the next two batters. In danger for the Demons experiencing déjà vu with stranding runners on base, Mitchell decided to take matters into her own hands. She took a belt high fastball right up the middle into centerfield that allowed for Sparks and Buchholz to come around and score. It was a storybook ending for Buchholz as she represented the winning run on a night where she was recognized as the lone senior on senior night. Buchholz finished the night going 1-for-2 with a walk. It may sound like a broken record, but Molly Sparks was terrific once again finishing the night as the winning pitcher in seven innings of work giving up just one run on six hits and three strikeouts.

With the win the Demons improve to 18-17 on the year and most importantly some needed momentum heading into the final doubleheader of the regular season. The Demons finish off the season Monday night hosting Central Lee (17-16).
