In a playoff area matchup, the Sigourney softball team advanced to the semifinal regional game by defeating Winfield-Mt. Union 7-1 on Wednesday.

The Wolves brought the offense early by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. That lead was short-lived however as Sigourney managed one run in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead in the third with one more tally. Holding a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning the Savages broke out for five insurance runs in the next two frames to secure the victory.

More than enough offense was provided for Kendall Streigle as she went all seven innings in the circle giving up no earned runs on just three hits and five strikeouts. Five Sigourney batters managed 10 hits led by Autum Barthelman going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

With the win Sigourney improves to 20-11 on the year and most importantly advances to Friday’s regional semifinal game hosting New London (14-13). The Wolves end their season with an 8-16 record. A bright future is on the horizon for WMU as they bring back most of their team next year including their star eighth grade pitcher Madie Anderson. They will lose Hannah Mathews, Hannah Buffington, and Kara Wade to graduation.
