After a week long celebration for the Sigourney softball team capturing their first state appearance in over a decade, the Savages (22-11) will look to keep their fantasy a reality as they prepare for their first round of the class 1A state game against No. 2 Akron-Westfield (35-2) today in Fort Dodge.

The Savages are no strangers to playing the underdog role, in fact, they have flourished in the opportunity. They are coming off of their huge regional final win against No. 3 Martensdale-St. Marys last week. Lone senior Kendall Streigle has been a warrior in Sigourney’s postseason run, including pitching through an injury to only allow two runs to one of the best offensive team in the state in the Blue Devils. Streigle will be looking for some repeated success against an offensive juggernaut, as Akron-Westfield comes in as the highest scoring team in class 1A. Up and down the lineup the Westerners have weapons, as all nine starters have above a .300 BA led by Kiana Appley with a .561. The Sigourney offense will have to go through Ann Hedlund who has a 1.23 ERA in 91 innings of work. Autum Barthelman looks poised to lead the Sigourney attack, as her .458 BA led the South Iowa Cedar League.

The road to a state title begins today at 3. p.m. in Fort Dodge. Tune into KCII starting at 2:30 p.m. to listen to the broadcast and hear all of Sigourney’s state run.
