Iowa’s state legislature may have to go into a special session to make improvements on the budget for the 2017 fiscal year.

The Iowa Legislative Services Agency released a report on July 3 that shows the budget is $104.4 million below projected revenue. State Senator Kevin Kinney (D) says it is likely that the legislature will have to go into a special session to balance the budget by September 30. Kinney says where he thinks cuts should be made, “The tax credits are the only thing that has not had to take a cut this year. Where every education, university, colleges, you name it, domestic violence, has had to take a cut. And that’s the only thing that hasn’t been cut and I think that we’re going to have to go in and look at those tax credits.”

Kinney says that Iowa’s economy is still growing, but that tax credits are taking up much of that growth. He believes those funds should be put into programs including education. Governor Kim Reynolds has the authority to use $50 million of the Economic Emergency Fund to cover the budget deficit, but that still leaves over half to be paid even.
