A hotel motel tax is on the ballot today in the City of Washington.

Residents of Washington will vote whether or not to adopt a seven percent tax to be implemented on sleeping quarters in the city, meaning people who rent rooms when visiting would pay the tax. If adopted by voters, the funds collected will be used to promote Washington, encourage local tourism, and for improvements to the city and facilities. The rest of the money would then go to tourism and local improvements. According to the state, over 150 other cities in Iowa and 17 counties have adopted such measures. Polls are open from noon to 8 p.m. today and the only location to vote is the Washington County Courthouse. Listen to KCII tonight for results live from the courthouse.
