With the start of the fall sports season just around the corner it is time to look ahead to football and preview the upcoming year for the Columbus Community Wildcats.

The Wildcats are coming off of a season where they went 2-7 and their most decisive win came against Van Buren in the season finale, beating them 48-0. They will have some holes to fill on the offensive side including at quarterback where they lost Carter Colby to graduation; he threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the leading rusher with 550 yards on the ground; their top returner in that category is Nick Hernandez with 270 yards. Senior Abel Mena will look to fill the void at receiver, as he is the top returner back with 92 yards and a touchdown in 2016.

On the defensive side, the Wildcats bring back some experience including their top two tacklers in Hernandez and Mena. Last year, the pair led the team with 97 tackles combined. Columbus will look to take advantage of the school’s new athletic lifting program that was set in place in the beginning of the summer.

The Wildcats will kick off their season next Friday in an area showdown against Winfield-Mt. Union.
