The highest percentage of subsoil moisture in Iowa rated at very short since November of 2013 was seen last week.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly report, across the state 25% of subsoil moisture is very short, 33% is short, 42% adequate, and none is surplus. Southeast Iowa subsoil is drier and rates at 53% very short, 30% short, and 17% adequate. In regards to topsoil moisture in southeast Iowa it is 59% very short, 33% short, and eight percent adequate. At this time last year over 90% of Iowa’s subsoil and topsoil moisture was adequate to surplus.
