“Sink or Swim” is the motto for Winfield residents as they celebrate their annual Crooked Creek Days August 4-6.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of residents challenging the laws of physics with the cardboard boat regatta at the Twin Lakes Golf Course and Country Club. Winfield Mayor Chris Finnell recounts the first regatta 20 years ago, “These guys made a big battleship, I think there was like 10 people in that boat on that first year. And then the second year they came back and built an aircraft carrier which is really cool. They actually shot a radio-controlled airplane off the top of it as they were racing in the lake there. So lot’s of fun, we’ve had lots of different variations of boats.”

The cardboard boat regatta isn’t the only water activity at Crooked Creek Days, as they also have an adult air mattress race on the golf course lake. Finnell adds, “The community spirit that is in Winfield, it really bubbles out during Crooked Creek Days. We attract a lot of people from surrounding communities. We have a great parade, people do a lot of work on that. And I just think that, you know, it’s a chance for Winfield to champion what they have, what they do, and one of the biggest assets that Winfield has is the good people and the good citizens of our community.”

The KCII Big Red Radio will stay on dry land at Crooked Creek Days, broadcasting live Saturday as part of the KCII Summer Town Tour.
