The WACO volleyball team will kick off their 2017 campaign today when they host a tournament that also features area schools Columbus Community and Sigourney.

WACO is coming off of a 14-15 season where they lost four players to graduation. Kiana Miller returns to lead the offensive attack, coming off of a 2016 campaign where she had 116 kills with a kill efficiency of .173. Miller also provides a defensive boost, returning with the most digs on the team with 195. Senior Taylor Roth returns as the top blocker from last season with 29.

Columbus Community went 9-20 in 2016. Losing their kill leader in Shania Boyd to graduation, Maki Mendenhall is primed to fill the void as she is the top returner in that category with 113 last fall. Courtney Zaehringer will set up the offense as she was in the top five for most assists last season in the SEISC North division with 287.

Sigourney brings back a lot of experience from a team that went 7-20 last season. Sloane Magill returns with the most kills on the team in 2016 with 138. Leah Carter will be one of the top setters in the South Iowa Cedar League with 393 assists a year ago, fourth in the conference.

Others schools in attendance will be Centerville, Pekin, Van Buren, Wapello, and West Burlington. All of the action gets started at 5 p.m. tonight at WACO High School.
