Increased golf cart and ATV use on the 4th of July sparked discussion for the Wellman City Council.

City Clerk Beth VanWinkle says there were children under the age of 16 driving ATVs and golf carts. VanWinkle also says there were groups of four to six people riding a two-seat golf cart. They also witnessed groups of children riding on the front and back ends of ATVs. Iowa code states that minors under 12 years old must have parental or instructor supervision when operating an ATV. Wellman Code of Ordinances states that ATVs may only be driven on streets in accordance with state code, but they shall not be operated in city parks without permission from the city council. Wellman code states that golf carts may only be operated by those possessing a driver’s license. The council decided at their August 7 meeting to leave their code unchanged, but to do more publicity next summer about their ordinance on golf carts and ATV’s.
