Wellman City Council took action on changing the wording of their fireworks ordinance.

The city’s current ordinance states that use and sale of fireworks in the city is prohibited, unless a permit is granted by the city to a fair association, city agency, or other organization approved by city officials. The council decided in June not to change their fireworks code to match the state’s at that time. City Administrator Kelly Litwiller brought the ordinance to the council’s attention following the July 4th holiday as something that needs to be addressed. City Clerk Beth VanWinkle says a number of people set off fireworks without permits around the holiday. On August 7, the council directed their city attorney rewrite the town’s fireworks ordinance to cover all legal aspects, still requiring permits for people to use fireworks. VanWinkle says the council hopes to have this completed within the next couple of months.
