The National Weather Service has taken a look back at the storms so far this year, particularly all of the tornadoes, two of which were in Washington County. In total there were 21 tornadoes in eastern Iowa. The two that occurred locally were on May 16th. The first was an EF-1 twister near Lake Darling State Park that caused damage to farm outbuildings and trees. Estimated peak winds were 110 miles per hour and the path length was 3.3 miles with its max width at 25 yards. The second was near Riverside about two hours later. The second tornado was also an EF-1 and estimated peak wind speeds were at 110 miles per hour causing damage to numerous farm outbuildings, power lines, and trees. The path of the tornado was nearly six miles long with the maximum width at 40 yards. No injuries or deaths were reported.
