Private wells should be tested for quality annually.

The Washington County Environmental Health Department will test wells for free each year. Director of the department Jennine Wolf explains what they test for bacteria and nitrates, “If they find coliform, then the only bacteria they will test specifically for is E. Coli, because that is an indicator of sewage getting in your water.”

They also offer up to $500 in reimbursement to plug wells and $1,000 to rehabilitate a well. The program aims to protect the residents of Washington County and protect ground water. To set up a test contact the Environmental Health Department at 653-7782.
