September is National Preparedness Month and one thing you should have in place with your family is a communications plan.

Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen says it should be something you have established with your family members for both when you’re all at home, or if you’re all at different places like work and school. She also advises you’ll need a plan for if you have to evacuate or if you have to shelter in place, “If you’re not at home when something happens, if you’re at work and your kids are at school, do you have a place to meet? How are you going to contact each other? A great thing to have is an out of state contact so disaster hits here in Iowa, but not somewhere else you can all check in with that out of state contact and know that you’re all safe.”

The theme this September is “Disasters don’t plan ahead. You can.” Residents are encouraged to have emergency kits at home and in their cars, should a disaster ever strike. For more preparedness information click here and here.
