Henry County is in the initial phases of planning for a new law enforcement center and jail.

A bond referendum of $9.1 million to construct a new jail and law enforcement center was passed by an 84.7% vote in a special election this August. The Henry County Board of Supervisors approved a contract for construction manager to Midwest Construction Consultants of Houghton on August 31. The board also approved a request for proposals (RFP) to be sent out by Midwest Construction Consultants. County Auditor Shelly Barber says the deadline for architects to send proposals is September 14 at 5 p.m. Barber says the county is looking at using six acres of county-owned land on South Iris Street in Mount Pleasant as a potential location for the center. The bond referendum states they may use county-owned land or acquire land if necessary for the building.
