The City of Kalona will be undergoing its Salverson Creek restoration project this month.

Two bid packages were presented to the city council at their Tuesday meeting. The council approved the package from Petersen Construction Inc. of $276,228.75 and awarded the construction contract, per HBK Engineering’s recommendation. The plan is to do a two-tier repairing and buffer of about 1,100 linear feet north of Highway 22 on Salverson Creek. The goal is to stabilize and maintain the creek’s streambanks, and provide a mechanism to slow down fast-moving water.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says, “One of the things we have to do is we can’t negatively impact the property owner based on what we’re looking to do. We did a DNR permit for that creek restoration and we have to validate through HBK and the flood center that it will not negatively impact any property owner greater than what it does now and it did not.”

The city plans to use about $100,000 of State Revolving Fund money, as well as the city’s storm sewer water fund for the project.
