Take steps to prevent fires during harvest and have a list of 911 addresses for your fields in case of emergency.

According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, fires cause millions of dollars in property damage in Iowa including loss of machinery and crops, as well as injuries to farm workers and firefighters.

ISU Extension and Outreach reminds farmers to keep machines clean and frequently blow leaves and plant material from the engine area, especially at night as morning dew can make it more difficult. Also, check coolant and oil levels daily. Prior to fueling, wait 15 minutes to reduce the risk of a spill volatilizing and igniting. Another tip, is to delay harvest when wind speeds are 30 miles per hour or stronger and conditions are dry.
