As Kalona residents wait for those familiar white flakes to come falling this winter, it’s time to be reminded of the city’s snow ordinances.

According to the Kalona City Ordinance no person shall park or leave any vehicle on any public street, alley, or city-owned off-street parking area during snow removal operations unless the snow has been removed or plowed from said area and the snow has ceased to fall. In Kalona it is unlawful for any person to place any ice or snow from private property, sidewalks, or driveways onto a street or alley to obstruct gutters or impede the passage of vehicles upon the roadway or create a hazardous condition; except in the cleaning of large commercial drives in the business district it is necessary to move the snow onto the road temporarily and will be removed promptly by the property owner or agent. Property owners are responsible to remove snow and ice promptly from sidewalks, and if they don’t within a reasonable time, the city may do so and assess the costs against the property owner in the same manner as a property tax.
