The Washington (1-0) girls’ basketball team made a statement on Monday night thrashing Eddyville-Blakesburg (0-1) 53-21 in the season opener.

As heard on KCII, it was all Demons from the start, jumping out to an early 11-0 lead thanks to a stifling 1-2-1-1 press that created a lot of Rocket turnovers. Those takeaways led to easy fast break points as the Demons cruised to a 26-5 lead heading into the break. After a quick 5-0 run for the Rockets out of the second half, the Demons answered right back thanks to a pair of threes from Sarah Nacos. The lead grew to as much as 33 points, and the Demons cruised to the 53-21 victory.

The leading scorer a year ago, Nacos picked up right where she left off finishing the night with 21 points. Kira Ropp was efficient off the bench managing 10 points. Morgan Brinning added eight points and was active defensively with six steals. The defense of the Demons was too much for the Rockets, as they created 19 steals on the day.

The Demons look for a winning streak next Monday when they host Cedar Rapids Washington.
