November 1 marks the beginning of the open enrollment period for Iowans purchasing or changing their individual health coverage to become effective January 1, 2018.

The Iowa Insurance Division is encouraging residents to contact a licensed insurance agent during this period, as many are struggling to handle rising premiums in the individual health insurance market. Iowans should review information on 2018 plans and prices, but if they find themselves priced out of the individual market, an agent can explain options that may be available in their specific situation, according to the Iowa Insurance Division. Consumers should also gather information about their anticipated 2018 income before meeting with an agent, as federal tax credits under the Affordable Care Act are determined based on income. Iowans can find insurance agents and healthcare information with Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa and Iowa Association of Health Underwriters. The open enrollment period ends December 15.
