Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall.

According to horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, large, firm, healthy bulbs should be selected and planted in well-drained soils in partial to full sun. If soil conditions allow, these bulbs can be planted as late as December. Tulips and daffodils should be planted six to eight inches in depth. It is also recommended to plant them in groups or clusters.
